Understanding the Role of an AC Compressor

An air conditioner has various components that contribute to keeping the home cool and comfortable during hot weather. It is the heart of all air conditioning units and is crucial for enjoying the cool air. Any issues with the compressor can compromise indoor comfort and cause performance problems with the unit. 

The compressor is housed inside the outdoor unit. It significantly contributes to the cooling process and ensures effective AC functioning. This article explores how an AC compressor works and its role in air conditioning operations.

The role of an AC compressor

A motor powers a compressor. The latter's primary function is to draw the refrigerant from the evaporator coil and pressurize or compress it to raise its temperature. The compressor changes the refrigerant into a high-pressure and high-temperature gas before the refrigerant moves to the condenser coil. 

The compressor's operations make the process of air conditioning possible. When the compressor pressurizes the refrigerant gas, it only discharges heat out of the house to create cool air. A compressor also helps the AC eliminate humidity. Therefore, a poorly functioning compressor can turn the room moist and humid.

The refrigerant should be hotter than the outside air to eliminate heat from a building. The refrigerant enters the compressor through a suction line. The piston inside the compressor moves back and forth to draw the refrigerant gas and squeeze it tightly. This squeezing packs the molecules tightly together to raise the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. 

The refrigerant then uses a discharge line to leave the compressor to flow into the condenser coil, where it cools down and changes to liquid form. The refrigerant then goes back to the evaporator coil to restart the process. Finally, the compressor circulates the refrigerant within the AC system to ensure it runs properly. 

Signs that an AC compressor is failing or has gone bad

Due to multiple moving parts, a compressor is vulnerable to breakdowns. A failed compressor means a failed AC system. Here are a few signs indicating that it is time to call an AC repair technician to examine the compressor:

  • The home temperature fails to go down even after turning on the AC.

  • Strange banging, clicking, or screeching noises from the unit.

  • Leaks around the unit.

  • The outdoor releases cold or lukewarm air.

  • The compressor is hard starting.

  • The air conditioner fails to work.

AC compressor maintenance

Regular compressor maintenance is essential for overall AC functioning. To prevent AC compressor failure, clean the filters, check for refrigerant leaks, clean the coils, keep the suction lines clear, and inspect the wiring. In addition, schedule periodic technician visits to inspect the compressor for signs of damage or failure. Finally, always contact an AC service technician if there are any issues with the compressor.
